This plant is perfect in salads and has a beautiful color.
This popular tree belongs to the legume family and is native to northern India, Vietnam and southern China. It is a small to medium-sized tree that ranges from 10 to 12 meters tall.
It is also extravagant, with big leaves and large, beautiful fragrant blossoms that are pinkish purple, bluish or white. Just like other legumes, the fruit is a pod that is 15–30 cm long, with lots of seeds.
This is a multifunctional tree. The bark is used to dye fabrics, and young leaves and buds are eaten as vegetables. It can tolerate some frost, but is not hardy enough for the Swedish climate. The obcordate leaf has become a symbol of the Swiss Bauhin brothers, who named the species. The species epithet variegata refers to the variegated appearance of the blossom
